Guinness 250th Anniversary Stout

I've been hearing whispers in the wind about this one. "Anniversary edition of Guinness is coming!" And I have to say I wasn't as excited about this as some of my Guinness-loving friends were.

I like dark beer, but I really don't enjoy drinking regular Guinness. I find it to be burnt and bitter tasting - in a way that makes it less drinkable than I'd like it to be. I've tried several times to re-evaluate it, but I just don't love it, and there are a lot of local dark beers that I would order in its place at a bar any day. That being said, I was intrigued abut the idea of a "special" Guinness. Would it be maltier? Stronger? Sweeter? Would it make up for what I don't like about the regular version?

It pours lack with a light white head. I should say that I got this in bottles - not on tap - so it is carbonated with CO2 instead of nitrogen. It smelled like... well... an ale, frankly. Not like Guinness, not malty enough to smell very stout like. Where's that maltiness? Where's the toasted bread smell that makes Guinness famous?

The taste is a bit of a let down as well. It tastes more like a brown ale than a stout. That aside, it tastes like a good brown ale. It is thin and misses the mark on the level of malts in it. It is a drinkable beer, but doesn't live up to the epic fame of Guinness, and falls even shorter when it is supposed to represent a celebration, a special version of the infamous brew.

I was hoping for more depth and complexity, and was let down. However, if you're looking for an above average brown ale/porter taste, and want something that will be pretty widely available (at least for a while) then this is your brew.

Sorry, Guinness, I'm not impressed.

Wow! Disappointment! This is the first I read of the 250, and I have to say I'm shocked!
I would think you break your a__ to brew the best beer on the face of the Earth when you hype it as a special 250th Annv Stout.
I want to try it just to see what I think now, but I'm let down. I was hoping for a more authentic Guinness, and it sounds as though they missed the mark.

I eagerly bought a six pack of this when I saw it in the store myself (I rarely will devote a 6 pack to something untested, but come on it's the 250th anniversary!). Had the first one a few nights ago and I'm sure I had that look on my face like "Maybe I did something wrong?! - Did I not drink it right? Did I not pour it right? Too warm? Too cold? Shouldn't this just blow my socks off?"

Then I realized it was just like you said - a decent, unremarkable, 5 out of 10, right in the middle of average, ale. This could have been something so special, but they went lackluster instead. Guess that's one way to go.

I know if I came up with anything of this quality for my wife for our 250th anniversary she'd divorce me, even after 250 years. I know there's a lot wrong with that statement, but you get the point - this should have been phenomenal! The curse of expectations I guess.

Oh man I was looking forward to trying this after a few recommendations. I'll still try to keep an open mind about it all though. I'll post the full review sometime sunday/monday on my blog:

That's interesting. I've been looking forward to trying this beer - and now not so much!

I've read that this 250 brew is not available domestically (Ireland) Maybe they new its a bit more hype and marketing rather than a truly great creation?

I found te Guinness 250 to be decent, if nothing spectacular. But if you're going to talk Guinness, you need to have it from St. James Gate. Except for the widget bottles, the Guinness you get in the states is made in Canada, and while they import some wort ("essence of Guinness") to add to it, it's not the same.

My family and I went to the UK in 2005 for the World Science Fiction Convention, and spent thre days in Dublin as part of our time there. We went to St. James Gate and took the tour*, which includes a fresh pint in the Gravity Bar.

My wives (poly, not Mormon) were not big stout fans, and were concerned with getting their pints. I told them that if they didn't like it, the beer would be drunk. As we stood and enjoyed the view of the city, I asked them how their beers were, and they simultaneously clutched their glasses to themselves and said "you can't have it!"

If you haven't had it fresh, you just don't know ho goood Guinness is.

*The floor below the Gravity Bar is a restaurant, and we were appalled to find that they had Budweiser (US) on tap, presumably for the terminally clueless)
